Appliance removal: what we haul away

  • Kitchen: refrigerators, freezers, stoves and ranges, dishwashers, microwaves
  • Laundry: washers and dryers, stacked units
  • Basement and garage: chest freezers, garage fridges, water heaters, dehumidifiers
  • Seasonal: window air conditioners, portable AC units

Appliance swaps are the most common reason people call. The new one gets delivered, and the old one ends up in the garage because nobody took it away.

What local trash programs require for appliances

Appliances with refrigerant come with extra rules nearly everywhere, because that refrigerant has to be recovered before disposal. Here's how several communities we serve handle it, according to their own guidelines:

  • Novi

A refrigerator can be scheduled with Priority Waste for your regular collection day at no extra charge. You have to get it to the curb.

  • Northville

Appliances containing Freon need a paid sticker from City Hall, and refrigerator and freezer doors must be removed.

  • Commerce Township

Refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, water heaters and stoves are picked up at no charge, with doors and racks removed from fridges and freezers.

  • Plymouth

Each appliance needs a paid special refuse sticker, and refrigerant units also need certification that the Freon has been removed.

  • Bloomfield Township

Fridges, freezers and air conditioners need a call to Priority Waste the day before, doors removed, and they're picked up by a separate truck.

  • West Bloomfield

Doors and racks come off, and Priority Waste needs notice the day before for refrigerators, freezers and AC units.

These programs are a good deal if you can get the appliance to the curb and follow the steps. When you can't, whether it's a chest freezer in the basement or a fridge you'd need a dolly and two friends to move, appliance removal takes care of the carrying, the doors and the stickers.

Before we arrive

  • Empty it. Clear out food from refrigerators and freezers, and clothes from washers and dryers.
  • Unplug and drain. Unplug refrigerators ahead of time so they can defrost, and drain washers.
  • Shut off gas and water. Gas dryers, gas ranges and water heaters must be disconnected from the gas line before removal. If you're not sure how, a plumber or appliance technician should do it.
  • Tell us about the path out. Basement stairs, tight turns and narrow doorways help us plan the crew.

Appliance removal FAQ

Why are refrigerators and freezers handled differently?

They contain refrigerant. Under federal Clean Air Act rules, the refrigerant in appliances such as refrigerators, freezers, window air conditioners and dehumidifiers has to be recovered before the appliance is scrapped or landfilled. That's why local programs attach extra steps to them. Northville requires a paid City Hall sticker, the City of Plymouth requires a certification sticker showing the Freon was removed, and most townships want the doors off and a call ahead.

Will Novi pick up my old refrigerator for free?

The City of Novi's guidelines let you schedule a refrigerator with Priority Waste on your regular collection day at no extra charge, as long as you get it to the curb. If it's a basement chest freezer, or you'd rather not move a heavy fridge yourself, we can take it from where it sits.

Do I need to disconnect the appliance first?

Please empty refrigerators and freezers and unplug them ahead of time. Washers should be unhooked and drained. Gas dryers, gas stoves and water heaters need the gas supply safely shut off and disconnected before we arrive. If you're not comfortable doing that, have a qualified plumber or technician handle it.

Can you take an appliance from the basement?

Yes. Basement chest freezers, old washers and dryers, and water heaters are some of the most common appliance jobs, because they're the hardest to get to the curb yourself.

Is it cheaper to remove several appliances at once?

Usually, yes. Replacing the kitchen, or both the washer and dryer? Put everything in one request and we'll quote it as a single trip.
