Junk removal in Northville: older homes, tight spaces

Northville is compact: about two square miles and 6,119 residents in the 2020 Census, sitting right on the Wayne–Oakland county line at Eight Mile Road. A lot of its character comes from older housing. Victorian-era homes, many in the Queen Anne style, line the streets around downtown Main Street and the historic district.

That charm comes with practical challenges when something big has to come out. Older homes tend to have narrower staircases, tighter basement access and less driveway space, and parking near downtown is limited. A sleeper sofa that went down the basement stairs in 1985 doesn't always come back up the same way.

That's why the quote form asks where the items are. The more we know about stairs, doorways and parking before we arrive, the better we can plan the crew and the truck, and the faster junk removal in Northville gets done.

What Northville's bulk pickup covers, and what it doesn't

The City of Northville contracts with Priority Waste for weekly trash, recycling and compost collection, and the program includes curbside pickup of large items. It's worth using when it fits, and junk removal in Northville picks up where it stops. According to the city's Solid Waste page, here's how it breaks down:

Picked up at the curb

  • Furniture, mattresses and box springs
  • Large appliances, water heaters and steel bathtubs
  • Televisions and other bulky household items
  • Appliances with Freon, but only with a paid City Hall sticker and fridge/freezer doors removed
  • Compost and yard waste, weekly from April 1 to November 30

Not covered by the city program

  • Basement, attic and apartment cleanouts
  • Remodeling and building materials: drywall, lumber, flooring, countertops, windows, roofing, concrete and brick
  • Metal sheds, garage doors, swing sets and picnic tables
  • Tires, car parts, lawn mowers, pool heaters and furnaces
  • Tree stumps, sod and dirt

Much of that second list, including cleanouts, remodeling debris and old furniture and appliances you can't get to the curb, is everyday work for a junk removal crew. For a specific item on the list, like a playset, a shed or a furnace, describe it in the form and we'll tell you whether we can take it. City rules can change, so check the City of Northville's Solid Waste page for the current program.

Common Northville junk removal jobs

  • Basement and attic cleanouts

The city program leaves these out entirely. We carry everything up the stairs and out, from boxes and old furniture to the treadmill nobody has used since 2012.

  • Downsizing and estate cleanouts

Long-held family homes collect decades of belongings. We clear rooms or whole houses for families, executors and realtors. See estate cleanouts.

  • Remodeling debris

Old cabinets, countertops, drywall and flooring from kitchen and bath updates, none of which the city will take. See construction debris removal.

  • Appliances

Fridges, freezers, washers and water heaters, taken from where they sit, with no sticker to buy and no doors to pull off yourself. See appliance removal.

  • Hot tubs

An old spa on a deck or patio is one of the hardest things to get rid of on your own. See hot tub removal.

  • Garages and yard debris

Garage cleanouts, plus branches and brush once the city's compost season ends on November 30. See garage cleanouts.

Northville Township: next door, different rules

People say "Northville" for two different places. Northville Township is the larger one: about 16.6 square miles in Wayne County and 31,758 residents in the 2020 Census, wrapped around the city. It runs along I-275, with Eight Mile, Seven Mile and Five Mile crossing it, and it's home to Maybury State Park, part of Hines Park, and Legacy Park, the roughly 350-acre former state hospital property on Seven Mile that residents voted to buy in 2009 and that is now open space with miles of trails.

The township has its own government and its own trash rules, and they work differently from the city's. Northville Township junk removal covers what those rules leave out:

Township bulk pickup

  • Bulky items like a couch or an appliance must be scheduled with Priority Waste by phone, email or online form
  • Priority's page lists about 5–6 items per weekly pickup
  • You get the items to the curb
  • Yard waste in kraft bags or labeled cans, roughly mid-March to mid-December

Where we come in

  • Move-outs and whole-house cleanouts that go past a weekly item count
  • Anything in the basement, upstairs or too heavy to move yourself
  • Remodeling debris and hot tubs
  • Jobs that need to be done by a closing or move-out date

For paint, chemicals and other hazardous waste, township residents can use the Washtenaw County Home Toxics Center on Five Mile Road by appointment. For construction debris and Freon appliances, check the township's rules directly with Priority Waste, since we couldn't confirm them from the township's published pages. Novi, right across Eight Mile, is our main service area, so we're never far away.

Northville junk removal FAQ

Does the City of Northville pick up bulk items?

Yes, within limits. The city's contractor, Priority Waste, collects large items such as furniture, mattresses, water heaters and televisions set out at the curb by 7 a.m. on your regular collection day. The program doesn't cover cleanouts of basements, attics or apartments, or building and remodeling materials. That's the work we do.

Will the city take my old refrigerator or freezer?

Appliances that contain Freon need a paid sticker from Northville City Hall before they go to the curb, and refrigerator and freezer doors have to come off first. If you'd rather not deal with the sticker, the doors or getting it out of the basement, we can take it from wherever it sits.

Can you clear out a basement or attic in Northville?

Yes. Basement and attic cleanouts are specifically excluded from the city's bulk pickup, and they're one of the most common reasons people call a junk removal crew. We carry everything up and out. For a full cleanout we'll usually set up a quick on-site estimate first.

I live in Northville Township. Do you serve me?

Yes. The City of Northville and Northville Township are separate municipalities with their own trash rules, but both are well inside our service area, and this page covers both.

How does bulk pickup work in Northville Township?

Township residents schedule bulky items like a couch or an appliance with Priority Waste by phone, email or the online form. Priority's page for the township lists weekly bulk pickup of about five to six items. For move-outs and cleanouts beyond that, we can clear it in one visit.

Can you work downtown, where parking and access are tight?

Yes. Tell us about parking, narrow driveways, steep stairs or anything else about access when you fill out the form, and we'll plan the truck and the crew around it before we arrive.

What can't you haul?

Hazardous materials such as oil-based paint, solvents, fuel and chemicals need a household hazardous waste program, not a junk removal truck. The City of Northville's Solid Waste page lists the current options for city residents; Northville Township residents can use the Washtenaw County Home Toxics Center on Five Mile Road by appointment.
