A big city next door to Novi
Farmington Hills is one of the largest cities in Oakland County: 83,986 residents and more than 37,000 homes in the 2020 Census, spread over about 33 square miles. It was incorporated in 1973 from Farmington Township and the villages of Quakertown and Wood Creek Farms, on land first settled by Quaker families from New York in the 1820s.
I-696, I-275 and M-5 all run through the city, along with Northwestern Highway, Orchard Lake Road and Twelve Mile, and Novi is right across its western border. That makes it one of the easiest places for us to reach.

What Farmington Hills bulk pickup covers, and what it excludes
Farmington Hills has one of the clearest bulk programs in the area. Based on the city's trash page:
Picked up on your regular day
- Large furniture, mattresses and box springs
- Refrigerators or freezers, with the doors removed
- Stoves and similar household items
- No call needed and no extra charge
- Set out no earlier than 6 p.m. the day before
Excluded by the city
- Construction debris and building materials
- Concrete, cement, asphalt and bricks
- Shingles and roofing materials
- Dirt and tires
- Asbestos
If you can carry it to the curb and it's on the first list, use the city's program. If it's a remodel's worth of debris, a whole basement, or something too heavy to move, that's where we come in. Asbestos-containing materials require a licensed abatement contractor, not a junk removal crew.
Yard waste in Farmington Hills
The city collects yard waste weekly from the first full week of April through the second full week of December. Brush has to be bundled under four feet and 60 pounds, with branches no thicker than six inches. For storm limbs, big brush piles or cleanups after the season ends, see yard waste removal; we take loose piles as they are.

Does Farmington Hills pick up bulk items?
Yes. Under the city's contract with Priority Waste, bulk items such as furniture, mattresses and box springs, stoves, and refrigerators or freezers with the doors removed go out on your regular collection day, with no call needed and no extra charge.
What won't the city take?
The city's guidelines exclude asbestos, asphalt, bricks, building materials, cement, concrete, construction debris, dirt, shingles and roofing materials, and tires. Most of those are exactly what a remodel leaves behind.
Do I need to wrap a mattress in Farmington Hills?
Only if it has bed bugs; the city requires those to be wrapped in plastic. If you'd rather not deal with it, tell us up front in the form and we'll plan for it.
Where do Farmington Hills residents take hazardous waste?
Farmington Hills is a member of RRRASOC, which runs household hazardous waste collection events, including a yearly drop-off for Farmington and Farmington Hills residents. Check the city's website for dates.
